Galeries Lafayette in Paris is currently hosting a pop-up store titled “Africa Now” on the third floor of its flagship store. This initiative aims to celebrate African fashion designers and showcase their talent. The pop-up, running until July 8, features 12 brands carefully selected in collaboration with various organizations.
One of the key partners in this endeavor is the African Export-Import Bank, which is instrumental in launching the Pan African Fashion Alliance. This alliance is a strategic move to foster growth, enhance skills, and facilitate trade opportunities for the burgeoning African fashion sector, both locally and globally.
Among the brands featured in the pop-up is Canex, a program supporting the creative and cultural industries in Africa. Notable designers like Thebe Magugu, Tokyo James, and Lukhanyo Mdingi have been showcased through Canex initiatives, including collaborations with renowned events like Tranoï in Paris.
Khanyi Mashimbye, a key figure at Afreximbank, expressed excitement about the potential impact of this retail initiative. She highlighted the importance of integrating African fashion into the global market, with hopes of expanding to other prestigious retailers like Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdales in the future.
The selection of brands for the pop-up reflects a focus on sustainability, with names like Late for Work from Morocco, Boyedoe from Ghana, and Wuman from Britain and Nigeria. The lineup also includes renowned figures like Adama Ndiaye from Senegal and the showcasing of emerging talent from various African countries.
